Hello Everyone, i came to the site to seek some help.
i have 1980 xs400 for couple of years now, unfortunately im not the biggest mechanic so i have trouble identifying problems with on the bike. The bike was sitting for a while, being started couple of times only for the last 1 year, however when i started it second last time it seemed to run just fine, i havent drive it for to long but everthing seemed fine.
The other day i wanted to bring the bike back home from the garage (approx 5-6km in distance) and i everything seemed to be fine, kickstarted it let it warm up, then push the choke back and started my journey back home.
Now in Neutral the Rpm seemed to be ok when i pulled the accelerator, however when i just started to roll in first gear, somewhere around 2-3k rpm the engine kind of felt like its choking on me, switched to second, kind of reved up until 2-3k again and that powerless sound again, felt like it looses all the power and same in 3rd and 4th.
I managed to get home and parked down the bike. now im thinking what could be different since last time i drove it; Carbs ? Fuel tank (rust) ? Dirt ? or something else ?

Any ideas guys on what should i look at ?

Carbs ? Fuel tank (rust) ?
Yes, look at both. It sounds like fuel related issues to me. Once you get the fuel tank/fuel cock/carbs clean you should ride the bike a lot, or else completely drain the fuel from the tank and the float bowls of the carbs. Leaving a bike standing with fuel in it is asking for trouble.
