I have a 79 xs400f and can't seem to locate a good aftermarket starter. Has anyone swapped to aftermarket and if so, what worked for you? I'm new to motorcycle mechanics and how it all goes together. I also need to figure out what the step by step process is to replace the starter. Where is it, how to get it out, tools needed, etc

Not sure you'll find a new one. Best bet is look up the Yamaha part number on any one of the online OEM parts houses (4R4-81800-61-00) then search eBay or Amazon to see what show up. Hopefully a good used one is available on eBay. The starter is located under a chrome cover behind the cylinders and you'll want to remove the left side cover to awapp it out as it engages a gear and chain. If the current starter spins but doesn't spin the engine, it could be broken springs on the starter clutch.
