I have an 82 Yamaha xs400 heritage special, it had sat for years when I bought it but was able to get it running without much work. I was going through it and doing a tuneup, and adjusted the valves on the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke. Rookie mistake I know. I took it for a short ride before realizing something was off, went to properly adjust the valves today and one of the screws had worked its way out of the rocker arm. The threads are all beat up so I had to order a new one. My question is, did I do any damage to the valves or can I just put it back together and see what happens? Should I pull the valves?
Thanks!

Whatever damage that might have occurred is done, so it might not be bad to just put the new screw in, adjust the valves properly and run it. If the bike doesn't run well and shows low compression or makes a noise, pull the top end apart and assess/address any damage.

I agree with the Captain. Put it back together and run it to see if there really is additional damage or not. My thoughts are it'll be fine since the screw would have loosened out causing the valve to not open enough as opposed to screwing in and holding a valve open and potentially strike the piston.
