I had just gotten my Maxim to finally start on gas for the first time in over a year, took it for its first test ride, when it stalled a quarter mile down the road and flat refused to start again. Once I got it home I got it to start and run for a bit on starter fluid, but it just wouldn’t stay on, even after I let it cool down. I made a post asking about jetting, and ok, I didn’t quite have the right mains in - still won’t start. Found out I had the fuel mixture screw set incorrectly - still won’t start. I don’t understand what happened, could someone enlighten me?

Kinda hard to say.

I would suggest going back to basics:

  • How is your compression?
  • Do you have spark?
  • Is fuel actually making it into the cylinder?
Beyond that, I'd maybe check valve clearances.

Compression is around 120, I have spark, and I put in new valve shims recently. I know fuel is getting to the cylinder because it'll run for a bit after being started on brake clean. I have an in-line fuel filter. It did seem like fuel sometimes wasn't getting to the right hand float bowl, even after cranking for a while. I guess I'm also not 100% confident on my float height, which I think is set to 25 mm. I'll attach a pic of where I'm measuring from, since it's hard to describe. The space between 0 mm and the end of the ruler is 5 mm, by the way.
