Kong Style Chopper build

OK, it's been a minute. Been busy the last few months with life. Happy to say, I am back in the garage-barn, chopping away! Actually seeing some progress. I figured out how to fab up my forwards. In retrospect, I could have done it much easier with a little planning and adequate materials. The tubing that my foot pegs are mounted in had a 7/8 OD, and I had to make an outer sleeve with an ID or 7/8.

The electrics are going to be housed in a faux oil bag, under the seat. This was fun to make.

Rear fender was modded out of CX500 front fender. Added some square tubing down the center to run wires from tail light.

Did some heavy modification to gas tank to get it to sit right. Hid the mounts and closed up the front. Will need to do a little body work on it before paint, same with fender.

Other than that, I just need to go over frame and swingarm, double check and clean up welds.

I have brought the motor into the basement and will be spending some time cleaning it up. May polish a few things, paint a few things. The engine had good compression. May need clutch plates, but hopefully that is about it. I will get better pics up as they come.

New rubber. Front wheel has a nasty whobble. I would say maybe 1/2". Can that be balnced with weights?

Motor is ready to go in the frame. I need to do some work on swing arm (weld on rear brake stay). When I extended the stay to match the extended length of the swing arm, I didn't account for the change in radiance to clear the tire. Measure twice.

When you say wobble, is that side to side or up and down? Have you tried truing the wheels to get rid of the wobble?

1/2" is a lot, the rim is quite bent.

I have not tried truing it. The rim was from a dirt bike. It seemed ok when I purchased it, but when I changed the tire, my neighbor was a little heavy handed, to the point of me telling thanks, but no thanks.

Any tips on truing the wheel? I feel like i could make a jig with an old swingarm and mount up a piece of threaded rod to use as a gauge.

You can use even a ziptie as a gauge.

You would need to loosen the 5 or 6 spokes around the bent area that are pulling the rim to the side that is bent and tighten the 5 or 6 on the opposite side to pull it back over. There is only so much you can do though if the rim is that bent. It's worth a try. If that doesn't work, loosen them all and start over. If the rim truly is bent a 1/2" though I'd say you would need a new one.

Progress

Starting to work on wiring. Need to finish building my headlight. It is a police spotlight that I placed a newer bulb in. Those old chrome spitlights are brass. Just sand em down.

Hey sorry to get slightly off topic, but I believe that was a forum members former bike you have there, from Ohio. Those carbs used to belong to me, I think I sold them to him back in 2013 or 14. They worked 100% and were completely gone through and had lots of new parts on them, including brand new JBM diaphragms. Obviously I have no clue what he did to them, or how they are from sitting, but just wanted to let you know that they were good a few years ago

Thanks, Wolfe! He mentioned that he was active on here. I think he had given up on it. When I found her, she had been chained up to a tree in the weather for several months.

Its been awhile...

Sorting some wiring issues out today. Regulator wasn't wired in right. Gonna add turn signals for the inspection. So close!

I used a 4 cell antigravity battery. Not sure if it is going to be worthy, which is kind of a bummer, as space is scarce in the ebox. May have to build a box for something more robust and tuck it in the swing arm.

Stock wheel is back on for the moment.

So, I got the wiring sorted out! Took her out to see how things felt. It had sat for a couple days with gas in the bowls and wasn't flowing quite right initially, but cleared out and I opened her up. I stayed close to home and putted around a bit, and then went out a dirt road at the edge of town. It was absolutley awesome to ride.

On my way back, she died suddenly. The chain sounded like it was spinning freely and not moving the crank. I haven't gotten to look at the clutch yet, but I think its blown.

So, the engine stopping suddenly? That was my cam chain breaking. The lock nut on one of the exhaust valve adjusting screws backed off and the screw went through the head, breaking cam chain, destroying the cam gear, and into the bottom end. I thought the carb had gummed up and here it was the exhaust valve. Oh my....

I have another motor that I had been canabilizing for parts. Getting the cylinders honed and a valve job. Should be ready to reassemble this week.

Checking the valves was literally the next thing on my list. Onward and upward.

This looks awsome! Hey what was that first blue tank you had mounted off, a honda maybe? I think this bike would look really cool with bold bright colors everywhere, like a scooby doo bike or something. Your other photo with the purple tank and undercoated frame sort of gave a little tease of how it would look (how it was before with the big skinny front wheel and ape hanger bars)

Thanks! Yeah, I dig the bright and shiny look, too! And love the Scooby idea! The blue tank is an Honda CL tank, not sure of the model. The current tank is also a CL, but modded a good bit to change how it sits. I was planning on brightening it up a bit, using the black as a base for stripes. Did it once, lots of layers, but as I pulled the last bit of tape the paint lifted and ruined it. Gonna do something to it yet! Cheers!
