Is it worth to buy for 950 CAD?

Hello gentlemen and ladies, it’s my first post here, I recently saw a post locally. Buyer did the following restorations,

New battery, front and rear wheel bearings replaced, front and rear brakes replaced, front brake line replaced, master cylinder rebuilt with front caliper. New front and rear tires, new front and rear sprockets with chain, swingarm bearing replaced, electrical box replaced, headlight replaced with an LED light, wiring and spark plug replaced, both carburetors rebuilt with original jets.

And I am wondering is it the DOHC maxim version? What’s the things I have to check if I schedule an appointment with the seller? I know nothing about the mechanics so maybe I should skip?

IMO go see it, the price is really good if it runs, brakes are the weak point on these if old (i had to get a 19mm master just so mine could stop), do the other oil/filter changes. At 41k, you might wanna read up on the manuals, as you will 100% be the one to see it need engine repairs when it finally gives out. Also check valve clearance if you hear any weird noises or it runs weird.

Apart from that, do the usual: see if it starts cold (a cold compression test never hurts), no loud clacking or knocking, check for smoke and steady idle when up to temp, check if the suspension moves without a lot of stick and that the oil is at least semi clear at the viewport.

Another important thing: ask if they delimited it and changed the cams. Poor assembly without a torque wrench can and will make the sprockets shoot off or seize the bearings.

These basically force you to learn some mechanics at some point, but are a great first project compared to other more complicated bikes.

Thank you so much for your detailed response, I have checked the bike and it’s in pretty good condition, no modifications on the engine so I probably gonna take it.

It’s not a DOHC Maxim unless the engine code confirms it (look for “12A” on the block). When you see the bike, check for oil leaks, charging voltage, coldstart behavior, and any odd noises. If you’re not comfortable mechanically, bring someone who is, don’t rely on the seller’s word alone.

from the pics, its 100% a dohc. dunno the VINs of maxims, but that engine is either the one on an 82-83 12E or 12F. Heck, you can even see the shape of the head made for 2 camshafts and the central chain room.
 
I just did a cold compression test on my 40K machine and it came up about 80psi, both cylinders the same so I am not worried. Did you do a cold compressiuon on yours and how did it fare?

Honestly, I would buy it. I paid 800 euro for mine and it dont look half as good.

did the starter actually run smooth? or did it sputter? my relatively unused one got like 130 cold i think, granted it was on a dedicated starter, not my sad 60ah fulbat. the book says 9.7 to 10.2 bar or similar compression, unclear if hot or cold. im presuming cold since its the only number in the book
 
The started turned it over very easy with both sparking plugs removed and I got 80psi on both cold. I see it asked for it to be warm but I cannot make it warm as just at the moment it dont run at all.
