How-to: What to do first with your new XS400

One thing you didn't mention should go between ID your bike and inspect your bike. You should say something about getting a repair manual. Maybe list a link to downloadable ones or where to find written ones.
Like downloadable one are in the stickied threads on the first page. Written ones can be found on Ebay both Factory and aftermarket.
Places like Amazon has them too. Often you can get the factory books through a dealer.
Tell them something like this, "Your repair Manual will be the most important and used tool in your tool box."

Hello wise people of the earth.
I recently bought a 1982 Yamaha maxim xs400 (got it for $300 ;)). I want to turn this into a brat/ cafe racer style bike (dont know where to start but thats a topic for another day). I was hoping someone would identify engine type? by looking at the pictures if its a SOHC or DOHC? any help/ maintenance tips would be greatly appreciated since I am new to the bike life. Thanks!!

I chose to leave my DOHC completely stock after reading how hard they were to customize because of the mono-shock frame, etc.
Some members have been able to do nice jobs in spite of this and here is my personal favourite thread on the subject. While it does kind of peter out at the end when new children get in his way, it's humorous and thorough, with lots of pictures:

Hey y'all so I finally got done with the legal paper work from DMV, insurance etc. I was very excited to ride my xs400 so I turned her on and noticed rpm higher than before like around 2800 to 3000. I kinda ignored them(I know stupid idea) but I did a couple rounds around my neighborhood and to my bad luck she just turned off out of no where smh... anyways tried to turn her back on but it would just sputter and would not turn on. I know this is very vague but anyone have any idea what is wrong?

Hi, I have an 82 Maxim (Canadian Import to the UK) and I'd be interested in your pipes/silencers(mufflers) if your going to cafe racer brat it! as they look to be in better condition than the ones on my bike! IF you are interested in selling them, let me know the price, and approximate shipping costs to England? Photo of my bike follows.XS 400 Maxim.jpg
