from Two cylinders to only one, (Cause of the burning oil?)

Okay, I got the Acorn nuts off, and the top part off. here is some Pics. most look like some Oil burnt on,

Cylinder walls look fine, (Comments please, I don't want to pretend I know what I am. doing)

Any suggestion as how to clean it?

Baking soda, good reference? Any other suggestions.

Okay, so I went to the local yamaha dealer, and the mechanic looked at it. His suggestion Skip honing, it, there was a obvious oil leak, so just rebuild it. The top of the valve springs he said was mushroomed, wouldn't trust them. New Pistons, The pistons were ping'ing on the valves. New valves, new everything, and rebore it. Any suggestions, I am going to create a new thread hoping for local MN/WI input after I copy the pic's here.

So has anyone done this, and Was it prohibitively expensive? this mechanic felt it would be $2,000. usd.

Does any one with specific knowledge about the Western Wisconson, Minnesota machine shops, that have been really good with us?

I would start looking for another engine as most of the parts you will need are not around anymore or will cost more than it's worth

Neighbor has started to help me with that thought. Wow I just found the other half of the cam chain guide. Any one have theory's on how I did this?
Just a 32 year old bike. Perhaps I did drive it hard. I am a half mile from the interstate. That should have been alright for warm up purposes. Perhaps the cam chain is shot too.

No, a half mile ride won't get more than the pipes warmed up. All air cooled engines are considered warmed-up when the OIL gets to operating temp. Usually around 200F or better. I prefer my oil to get above 100C / 212F so that any condensation will evaporate.

I'd suggest using a bead hone to de-glaze the bores at a minimum, assuming they are still serviceable. If the bores are gouged, then you will have to have them bored and honed, and get oversized pistons. Not worth it.

I believe it was the valve stems that are mushroomed. It is possible to remove 1mm or so from the valve stem by grinding it. Check your service manual for the minimum dimensions. And check to see if they are bent from hitting the pistons. If bent, they are scrap.

The pistons are probably fine. Unless they have huge dents and displaced metal from the where the valves hit, they will be fine - unless you have to bore the cylinders. Not worth it.

$2000 is probably more than your bike is worth. I'm sure you could find another engine for under $500. And have it running by the end of the weekend!

Nope, I don't see any gouges. I have see if I can find someone with a micrometer/inside/outside... measure the piston
hole.

This is the season to get the good deals. 3 for under $800. within a hundred miles of me.

Yea, that is a nice one. Cash on hand is the issue. There are three local bikes, that appear to be good buys, and if they are not, I am good enough to make it happen.
