Confused on reg/rec

Hey everyone,

I have a 1980 XS400.

I did a barebones re-wire. Everything is complete besides the alternator system. I am super confused here, though.

Does a 1980 have a combined regulator and rectifier? If so, how many wires should be coming out of it?


Also, what is this guy?

To answer your ? Yes.It reletively easy to find and sells for about $35.I have one on my bike.

Check on mikexs ,bike bandit,motorcyle super store.The part is universal and fits other models other than the xs400.I realy don't know what brand they are.I know that I have one on my bike its unmarked.Also good rectifier on google there will be many search results in which the part will come up.

Everything I found on those websites were for DOHC 1982 and above models

I see what you mean about being hard to find.I went through 12 pages on rectifier/regulator.com.
Maybe the ones from secas and maxiums will work also.Someone else would have to chime in.

Ebay was the first place to check. As far so I know the 1982 and above Dohc reg/rec are not compatible.

I picked up one from ebay, and it had a bad voltage regulator element. I suppose if everything goes right, it could be fine. my search yeilded

Seem to be a bit pricey,I bet if you keep looking around you can probably find one a bit cheaper
