So I am not really tearing into my bike too much until winter comes here in utah in around november, but Ive been messing around here and there while still keeping it my daily rider.
I am looking into replacing all the aspects of the igniton system on my bike for reliability and modern performance, specifically coils and wires at this point.
I want to relocate the mounting point of the coils anyways and I saw this "two in one" coil on mikesXS
https://www.mikesxs.net/parts/yamaha-xs650-ultimate-high-output-coil
It doesnt say anything about compatability for xs400's (like most stuff on the site).
To my knowledge I would assume this would work on an xs400, or maybe the specs/output arent right for our smaller bikes? (as opposed to the 650)
Anyone have any advice as far as aftermarket coils/coil goes for xs400?
They sell the stock coils for pretty cheap, but does the quality reflect from the price?

A two wire coil will not work on our bikes. The xs400 fires at 180 degrees apart where the xs650 is 360. If your bikes coils spec out fine you will be ok with them.

The 650 has a 360 degree crank, our 400s have 180 degree cranks. Different ignition timing.
I'm sure you could make that coil work but it'd only cause problems.

Which model 400 do you have? The 80+ specials already have 3ohm coils.

Edit: Chris beat me to it before I could hit "post."

Yeah I have an '82 400. Would I be ok to buy any single output 3ohm aftermarket coils?
I have dyna coils on my cb550 that I have loved and just want to upgrade the coils on my xs since they look a little rough and suspect. Plus I will be relocating them into a space that is probably more visible, and the smaller the actual coil the better in my siuation.
For example would these work? http://4into1.com/dynatek-5-ohm-black-coils-single-output-dc10-1/
Or should I stick with 3ohm? http://4into1.com/dynatek-3-ohm-green-coils-single-output-dc3-1/
Anyone know the resistance of my stock ignition system?

What about this one? is this just for sohc vs dohc? an 82 bike might be dohc, (maxim, if my short term mem is close) I think my coil is 4 ohm. (oem) see signature...

I seem to think that this is fine for the 80-81 bikes, it removes the need for the TCI, look up user Pamcopete, and you can find his comments.

He has a 400e advancer, and a HD model. I dont' remember which one woudl be good for me. which if I am going to spend $119, or 189, or 210 for, I want to make sure I am getting what is right my me.
