So, my choke just moves in and out freely.

My guess is that whoever was poking at the carbs last lost the ball and spring.

Holy carp, they are still available from Yamaha...

Spring 583-14589-00-00
Ball 93501-08001-00

I'm creating this thread to record part numbers. Install isn't very hard, if I remember right.

So you need to depress the ball and then push the choke lever on top…what do you use to depress the ball?
I use a small screwdriver/pick/stiff bit of wire to press the ball in on the spring and then push in the operating rod until it partially covers the installation opening. Then remove the holding device and press the operating rod all the way in.

I usually drop the ball in, put it in roughly the right place, hold all the other little openings closed with my fingers and push the rod through, so it only has the inward direction to go. Although, one of my life's greatest accomplishments was finding one of those stupid BBs in a grassy yard after it flew out... hateful little things!

I was careful…and the ball launched about 60ft down my garage 🙈

Put a lot of heavy grease between the spring and the ball. Then, with a tiny screw driver, push it down the hole and slide the rod over. You can also have a small transparent plastic bag over the work to stop the ball if it wants to leave anyway! Make sure you are on a clean workbench and, maybe, in a kind of a tray to keep the ball from going elsewhere.
