Bike Smoke Question?

I found an xs400 for $200 that I am thinking about getting. The owner says he had it running, smokes and then dies when you give it gas. Do you think this is just a carb problem or something more major. I dont' want to spend a ton of time rebuilding the engine if I do not have to.

I'd see if he can get you compression readings, that way you know if the bores/vavles are not leaking! your looking for 145 - 50 psi

Do you know what color the smoke is? Blue is oil, black is fuel, white is water.
