82 heritage, My third xs400

Well I have another one This was the one I almost picked up last year from the guy down the street but had other projects going and it was sold to another local guy. It has 14k on it ans is all stock. It had sat for the last three years other than a 2 mile drive from one owner to the next. The oil was 2qts over when I got it home and I don't think it was changes in the last 5yrs The gas was 2yrs old at least and smelled awful. The tires are new and in good shape the the battery seems to be ok after I filled the fluids up ( way low). The carb was rebuilt a few years ago but needs to be cleaned out. The bike needs a lot of tlc and a complete go over. I think it will stay mostly stock for a while and I will use this for longer rides so I can keep the miles down on my 79.

I know what I need to do and how to do it. But it is all the time it takes and how tired I get from trying to get it done in as little time as possible. Dam O.C.D. I did go over the entire front brake system today. All the parts and cable was in good shape it just needed to be cleaned and lubed. I also installed a set of LED brake lights on it. Walmart has these now and the set only cost $14 A lot better than the $25 I paid for the just one on my 80 a few years ago

Cool 3 xs`s and all 3 run cant get any better than to move up to 650

Already done that I have had a few but liked the 400 better.

I am not sure what it is off of. The guy said he had the modify it to fit but it look like it should be there. I was going to take it off and sell it but the wife said she may ride with me a little because of it.

No stuff like that on this. Lots of cleaning over the winter for sure with this one.

So Chris how many bikes do you have?That xs650 looks just as great as your other bikes

I have five now. The three xs400's and the two sh50 razz. I did have four xs650's over the course of a few years (a 76, 78, 80 and a 81) but I sold the last one in 2011.

That's quite a collection how long did it take you to aquire them and what is it that like better about the xs400`s of the xs650`s?

Most of them I have picked up over the last 3 yrs. The 79 I have had for over 15yrs. The 400 is easier to work on, waaay lighter and handles a lot better. Not to mention the 650 shakes like a cement mixer compared to the 400 Don't get me wrong the xs650 is a nice bike and has an endless amount of aftermarket parts and upgrades available for it. But after 2 years of riding them it just was not what I wanted.

Finished the oil change and carb cleaning/tuning. Lubed the clutch cable and cleaned the clutch rod. This bike is going to need a lot of winter cleaning The chain and sprockets are not too bad but they will need to be replaced over the winter also. Got he bike out for a 20mi ride and it runs very well This was the first xs400 I have ridden with a stock 80-82 exhaust system. I think it works very well. I will go up a tooth on the front sprocket to a 17 front and a keep the stock 37 rear. It runs 5k at 55 i want to to be 5k at 60mph like the other bikes. Get rid of some of the bits on it and did not like the wind screen at all.

Looking at your seats? is there a resourse for new materiel for the seats? or is your just a coat of armor all?

Just armor all in the past but lately I have been using these wipes. Works much better and the shine lasts. Also I don't have to look around for a clean rag and worry about spray getting on things it should not be.
