Hope your startup went well. I eventually found out that my issues were caused by low fuel when I finally sputtered and died on the side of the road. I had only gone about 65 or so miles on the bike since I had fueled it up, but I do remember that I had filled it up with the kickstand instead...

I had adjusted the valves per the manual last time I worked on the bike 5 years ago. I'd hope they wouldn't be out after just 120 miles. I'd be more inclined to believe that I may have a clog in the carb. Maybe something shaken loose that hadn't come out in my deep cleaning. I'm not sure...

Well, new spark plug cables and I connected both input ports to the vacuum line on the carb. I also swapped the throttle cable and greased the handlebar under the twist grip. It runs better but still doesn't want to idle at 1200 and I don't have much room left in the idle adjustment screw on the...

Well I've put 120 miles on the bike. It's been running great; warms up by the time I reach the end of my street and idles perfectly at 1200. the last couple times I rode it, however, I had difficulty starting (required me to hold some throttle), rpm would stay below 1000 during idle and...

I'll probably leave the right side on the bike to do it, the left side panels I'm more willing to take off. I bought some mothers last week when I detailed my bike. It really made all the aluminum and chrome shine. It didn't remove the oxidation on the fork covers or the engine case but it did...

Thanks for the writeup. I found a pic you posted of your bike and the side covers look great.

I might have to get some line and a T; I rode a few miles today and experiences the same symptoms. Pulled over and the cap I put on the line was gone again. I put another one on and zip tied it, rode around some more and it seems to be holding on. A side note, when I first reached down to feel...

Nope, I kept the vacuum petcock. The left side is connected to the petcock, the right side was capped. I have no idea how a cap wriggled itself off of that, but if it happens again I might just epoxy the spigot closed. Did you use an electric buffer on the engine covers? I used some mother's...

Took it for a short ride to let it warm up, then tried adjusting the adjusting the idle set screw and still had the issue. The right muffler was popping the whole time I was riding. I went down to inspect it and found that the cap over the right side intake boot port had somehow fallen off...

Tuesday I rode to the lake and back. Put about 26 miles on the bike and it rode great the whole time. I sat in this parking lot and let it idle for about 5 minutes and it did so perfectly maintaining 1200 RPM. Today I started it, let it warm up while I put my gear on, then rode a couple miles...

I knew it would only last so long it ran so beautifully so perfect until it got cold and now nothing... Sad day

Fuel, air, spark. If it didn't start in a minute, it's not going to start after 20. I'd check fuel first. Make sure you have gas in the tank. If it's not full, make sure you're on reserve. If that doesn't work, turn it to prime and see if it will start then. I was having an issue where the...

I also noticed your engine looks shiny and brand new. How did you clean it up so nicely? A friend recommended a 600 grit buffer wheel for my angle grinder followed up by some polish on a foam polishing cone, but I am a bit hesitant to remove material

The white looks great. The paint on my bike is pretty beat up and I will likely repaint it at some point. I might pay someone to do it though, my experience painting a Suzuki gas tank was less than ideal and it came out pretty mediocre.

Beautiful bike. I know they suck compared to disks, but drum brakes on the front look so damn good. Was white a factory color or did you repaint it?

Yeah it was a pain. I followed this video and did it with the forks still in the bike. Basically I stuck the Philips screwdriver into the indent on the plunger and then leaned on the screwdriver, then used a pick to move one end of the circle out of its notch, then eased up on the Philips. The...

Wow opening the tops of the forks was a pain. Popping the handlebars off helped a lot Loosen the 12mm pinch nut here and use a flathead to pop the plastic cover off Push down with a big Phillips screwdriver then pop the circlip out. This is a pain in the ass because you are fighting the...

How to replace the shaft seals and fork oil on an XS400 I put the bike on a downslope on the center stand so the front wheel would be off the groubd Loosen but don't remove the 14mm pinch nuts. I also loosened but didn't remove the JIS/phillips screw above it. Remove the 2x14mm bolts...

We had a tornado miss us by a couple miles this morning but it's nice out now, so I just rode around the block for 20 mins. No issues, so it seems my original assessment that the vacuum line was simply kinked was correct. Unfortunately when I had the tank off yesterday, I decided to see what I...

I got my seat off today and pulled the tank. The vacuum line is a few inches longer than it needs to be and I'm fairly certain that it may have been bunched under the gas tank and kinked up. I was very careful aligning it when I put the tank back on this time. Its raining now so I don't feel...
