    82 XS400 Regulator Rectifier

I have posted this bike as I restored it for my son, pictured on it. Trouble is that he has the bike at his school several hours away. He had a charging problem and someone who knows these older bikes but not how to find and order parts told him he needed the stator generator flywheel rotor that...

What did you do with your XS today?

Mine came from my father in law who bought it new, put 5,000 miles on it and parked it. It was all original including tires that still held air but that's about all they had going for them. Before letting my son have it I replaced tires, brakes battery, intakes, chain, sprockets, fresh paint and...

What did you do with your XS today?

Finally got the paper work done. First problem was getting insurance as they could not insure by the VIN that was on the original title After checking that it was correct and matched the one stamped into the bike I ended up giving the the full number on the sticker. The bike was last registered...

    Sticking throttle at carb

I would order a set of carb kits and do a rebuild. In the mean time Soak them in a bucket of solvent of some sort. I have picked up several guns over the years that were completely seized up because the owner thought coating them in oil would preserve them. Some "oils" will harden over time. For...

    1st post: just acquired XS400

They clear coat the aluminum from the factory and to get down to the actual metal that has to be removed. Minute scratches and chips let the aluminum oxidize under the surrounding clear. Using paint stripper first removes that barrier.

    Wanted - Parts

Could you post some photos of what your working with. I just rebuilt an 82', compression was good so I focused on the fuel system, tank, petcock, then carbs and everything in between. Once it was running good I ordered new tires, brakes, chain & sprockets Followed by a lot of elbow grease and...

    1st post: just acquired XS400

I had polished a lot of side covers. I found it best to use paint stripper on them first as they usually are clear coated from the factory. If they have any deep scratches I would start with a fine flat file then #320, #600, #1000 grit wet/dry paper with water followed by buffing compound. If I...

    Cruise control? What's this?

I had something similar on a BMW I had years ago. When I bought the bike new they said it had a cruise control, but throttle locker better is a better name for it. I have to say it was great when we would take some of our longer highway trips. On flat roads it let you give your right hand a...

    Which bike is this?

I have an 82 SJ, when I started trying to find out exactly what it was the first thing I found was SOHC stopped with the 81 and the 82 started 10/81 and was DOHC. When digging deeper some things didn't make sense. Mine has wire spoke wheels with drum brakes. After starting to restore it I got...

    Which bike is this?

There should have been an ID sticker on the frame neck with serial# and date of manufacture. The serial number will be there even if the sticker is gone or painted over.

    Just thought I'd say hi

That is very close to the color my son picked out for me to paint his grandfathers 82 XS400 Heritage Special. I think it goes beautifully with the style of your bike but when I brought the parts to be painted up to my friends body shop he had just finished this jeep and said he still had plenty...

    Carburetor Intake boot deformed

MikesXS has new sets but I don't know what shipping would be. I have gotten a lot of parts for my recent restoration (82 XS400 ) from them and can would recommend them. The other is eBay, they list a lot of them with some originals and new.

    77 xs cafe

Nice to see this one still going. I looked at this thread months ago before starting to get my father-in-laws 82' ready for my son to put on the road. I thought as a college student he would like the cafe style but he wanted to keep it just as it was when his grandfather rode it. Thanks for...

What did you do with your XS today?

This is a little crude but I think I got most of what you need. The steel measures 1 1/4" x 3/16" x 13" the Ubolts for 1" pipe should work. The holes are all a little over sized to make assembly easier.

What did you do with your XS today?

It came with them. It could be made with a piece of flat stock and a couple of U-bolts to attach it to the frame. If you want I can take some measurements and get a close up photo.

What did you do with your XS today?

I added these engine guards/crash bars. I have been waiting for a day off to rebuild the carbs and check valve clearance.
