They clear coat the aluminum from the factory and to get down to the actual metal that has to be removed. Minute scratches and chips let the aluminum oxidize under the surrounding clear. Using paint stripper first removes that barrier.

There should have been an ID sticker on the frame neck with serial# and date of manufacture. The serial number will be there even if the sticker is gone or painted over.

MikesXS has new sets but I don't know what shipping would be. I have gotten a lot of parts for my recent restoration (82 XS400 ) from them and can would recommend them. The other is eBay, they list a lot of them with some originals and new.

This is a little crude but I think I got most of what you need. The steel measures 1 1/4" x 3/16" x 13" the Ubolts for 1" pipe should work. The holes are all a little over sized to make assembly easier.

It came with them. It could be made with a piece of flat stock and a couple of U-bolts to attach it to the frame. If you want I can take some measurements and get a close up photo.

I added these engine guards/crash bars. I have been waiting for a day off to rebuild the carbs and check valve clearance.
