Been looking for stock needles for my 1980 XS400 Special 2

Been trying to find a replacement needle online. Can't find a 5GZ9 anywhere. I have one that appears to be bent. Can't find one anywhere. Located in the US

Thank you I have decided to return to google and found a reg/rec, it is spec'd for my bike as it has my reg and rect part numbers listed as OEM replacement. Some of the ones I found didn't list any part numbers This is from Ricks Motorsport Electrics...

So I found a reg/rec that addresses the variable field coil resistance. I am just going to buy this as it says it's spec'd to fit and it'll still just replace both pieces into one.

Ignition control is torn out putting in the XS charge electronic ignition from Mike's it's all 12v so amps needed will be pulled. I don't think anything will fry but we're giving it a try. Thinking of it's all done and successful I'll make a thread documenting. Course I'll give it some test time...

These combo units the regulator will shut off current from the stator and let the battery run the system. I was just wanting to replace it as a revamp. I understand they may work fine, but the fact still remains it's a 40 plus year old electronic. I will check to make sure it is working I know...

I guess in general what should I do about this regulator? By the sounds of it I am going to leave it in regardless. But I'm no expert in charging systems.

Thank You so much! You confirmed my suspicion. I knew that regulator had to be regulating to ground cause thats the only why for the coil to connect to ground. I have a couple questions for you. Is this regulator to ground necessary if I put in a rectifier/regulator unit?

Wow that is a mess! I would rip that best out and redo it, make it neater. You'll need to get a service manual or if you can print stuff off you can print out a wiring diagram. Just need to be sure it's for your exact year and model. There's also great diy wiring diagrams out there. best place...

I have a 80 XS400 Special II and I had been desperately looking for this answer. I didn't know if these electronic ignition kits replaced that damn ignition control box. Glad to hear it does.
