    xs400 1mm oversized piston rings

Yes I rebored the cylinders to the next size up. Found new old stock pistons that were the next size up and ordered new rings from that seller in Germany.

    xs400 starting problem

Take a picture of the pistons for us. Do they have +1mm stamped on them? Measure the ring gap and see if the rings are still in spec. The procedure is in the manual.

    xs400 starting problem

What tool are you measuring with? And at varying depths that was the average? I would double, triple, quadruple check those measurements. If those are accurate your jugs are 4 sizes over already. if you have standard pistons I dont think you'd have anywhere near those psi numbers with the jugs...

    xs400 starting problem

Not sure about the fuel issue. Compression wise though...Are the valves set proper? You can make a simple leak down tester and see where its loosing pressure. If it's coming through the crankcase then you have to take the jugs off and get an accurate measurement at varying depths of the...

    78 xs 400 E rebuild and modify

Ignition housing is junked. A previous owner, at one point decided to use a large metal screw to hold it together. Stripped and expanded the threads. Its toast. So I rigged up a rocker switch I had lying around. It fit right into one of the holes on the headlamp brackets I'm using. I'll have...

These look to be, from what I can tell, fairly close to OEM looking mufflers?

Rebuilt carbs this afternoon. Then warmed the bike up with a few laps around the property then about 5km down the road and back. Then finally synced the carbs Main jet 137.5, Pilot 45, needle 3rd position and 3 1/2 turns on the pilot mix screw and seems to be running good. Exhaust leak at...

    78 xs 400 E rebuild and modify

Manged to make some custom grips today. I started of by removing the pocket from the leather jacket. Also used the divider foam that comes in tool sets. Cut them to size and glued them together. I then used the old handle bars in a vice so I could sit down, listen to some music and...

    New Member/First Rebuild/Zero Compression... lol

If you end up having poor compression and need a rebore, over size rings and pistons, expect to pay in excess of $500 just for that job alone. That's if your doing all the work and paying someone to machine the cylinder jugs. Over sizes pistons are fairly rare. NOS is out there but not...

Not quite. Anything in the mail is taking weeks to deliver. I updated my build thread. I have broken pilot mix screws. Ugh.

    78 xs 400 E rebuild and modify

The zero compression turned out to be my guage. Forgot I took the Schrader valve out. Both cylinders are now over 150. The rebore was a success. Took a month to get some parts in. But I got the new plugs caps and wires and a few rubber pieces from yamibits. Got some foam rough cut to the shape...
