Stalled, won’t turn back on. 82 Maxim 400

Compression is around 120, I have spark, and I put in new valve shims recently. I know fuel is getting to the cylinder because it'll run for a bit after being started on brake clean. I have an in-line fuel filter. It did seem like fuel sometimes wasn't getting to the right hand float bowl, even...

Stalled, won’t turn back on. 82 Maxim 400

I had just gotten my Maxim to finally start on gas for the first time in over a year, took it for its first test ride, when it stalled a quarter mile down the road and flat refused to start again. Once I got it home I got it to start and run for a bit on starter fluid, but it just wouldn’t stay...

    Carb issues, XS400 Maxim

That’s really interesting, definitely explains why my cylinders are running different temps and i’m getting iffy throttle. You know why it’s done this way? Is this common with many models? Also - where’s the info coming from? I’ve yet to find a good manual online.

    Alsmot got this running 100%

What were your settings for the carbs? I’ve got an 82 Maxim that I’ve been fighting to get running.

    Carb issues, XS400 Maxim

Hey guys, hate to start another carb thread but I couldn’t find what I needed and there’s a lot of dead links out there. My ‘82 Maxim is running on brake cleaner but won’t start on gas. One time, seemingly randomly, it fired up first crank and idled for about 2 minutes but hasn’t since. Just...

Timing Chain Tensioner Moving Timing Mark - DOHC

Alright, I swear this is going to be my last post about timing... I hope Finally went back through and redid the timing (again) on my Maxim 400 by the book, got all the O marks lined up to their arrows while the T lines up with the line, but when I put the chain tensioner in, it extends out and...

Calling Anyone Who Knows DOHC Motors!!

Thank you so much for this, I was having a really hard time with the manual. I know I didn't touch the cam gear bolts among other things I probably didn't pay attention to.

Calling Anyone Who Knows DOHC Motors!!

I'll double check this, but the main issue I've been having is the fact that the manual only ever refers to the intake cam, and never once refers to the exhaust cam when describing timing. It says to align the L mark with the line, and then to set "the" cam to have the dot align with the arrow...

Calling Anyone Who Knows DOHC Motors!!

Hi and thank you, I've checked out those manuals and have still ended up hitting brick walls ! I'm hoping for some kind of troubleshooting guide, or somewhere I can get some answers as to why this bike isn't running

Calling Anyone Who Knows DOHC Motors!!

Hi!! I've made probably too many posts here asking for help on my '82 Maxim. It has the twin cam motor, and I'm having a lot of trouble finding any usable information / manuals / tutorials / people who know anything about it. I think a lot of my issues are coming from having set it up as if it's...

    What am I Missing? (timing?)

I'll give that a try and see what happens, it's currently about 2 turns out

    What am I Missing? (timing?)

I'm pretty sure the maxim, seca, and special all share the same DOHC 400, but there could be differences in tuning. The numbers read low to me, too, but at this point I'd be happy if the bike just ran and idled properly, which it (sort of) did before. So something I've done has messed that up...

    What am I Missing? (timing?)

hi, many thanks for replying - yea, I don't think the compression would be an issue to at least START it. This bike has electronic ignition timing, so is it still settable? My understanding was that it was automatic. My cam timing looks good to you? I was having trouble deciphering the book.

    What am I Missing? (timing?)

It's me again - the bike won't start. Here's a brief summary of everything I've done. 1982 xs400j Maxim (dohc), bought with carberator issues and revhang, wouldn't rev above 4500 rpm. Cleaned carbs, retested, no change. Rebuilt carbs with original carb parts, some change - no longer running...

No Start - Seems like it should..

Thanks for the advice - I've been trying to avoid this situation by only touching one thing at a time, but things kept not improving. I don't own a strobe, but I do have a simple timing probe. This is my first real project, so I'm learning as I go. I'll give this a shot and see what I find !

No Start - Seems like it should..

This is getting frustrating - it seems like the thing should just start and run with no issues. It's an '82 Maxim 400, so a DOHC - I bought it with issues, if you wanna read those, they're in my last few posts. Basically, I've put in new shims so all of the valve clearances are between .1 and...

No Start - Shims / Valve Adjustment

Think I'm adjusting the wrong screw, again.. I only adjusted one screw, the one that's in the middle of the two carbs and closest to the engine. I turned it in until it was difficult to turn and then out one and a quarter turns. I don't have a compression tester at the moment. The other thing...

No Start - Shims / Valve Adjustment

alright, I just went and checked on it. Both cylinders are getting spark, there's fuel in the float bowls (and vapor comes out of the spark plug holes when cranked without plugs), and the filter isn't an issue- it's off at the moment. The vapor coming out of the spark plug holes is what's making...

No Start - Shims / Valve Adjustment

Thanks for the replies - ordered some new shims, put them in, all but one valve is at .15 mm, with that left intake being at .1 because I suppose I did my math wrong - but they're all in spec. Thing is, it doesn't start now. I just replaced my spark plug boots, checked float bowls, tightened and...

No Start - Shims / Valve Adjustment

Gotcha, how do I know which shims are right? I've measured my shims, and know that I need 3 that are 2.65-2.7 and one that is around 2.75 mm thick, but how do I know which ones to order? Are they specific to the xs400 or are there general bike shims? Sorry, this particular thing is insanely...
